2017 SA Motocross National Round 1 – Port Elizabeth

Round 1 of the SA National Motocross Championship took place in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, 18 February.

MX1
Qualifying saw Anthony set good lap times and look forward to a great day of racing.
Heat 1, Anthony got out the gates into a mid-pack start. He had to work hard the first few laps to get himself into 2nd position. Anthony rode a smooth, consistent race behind the leader and playing the waiting game. Unfortunately on the second last lap, Anthony tried to make a move for the lead and dropped the bike in a sandy corner. Anthony remounted in 4th place and with only one lap remaining he had to settle in 4th.
Heat 2, saw another great heat with the top 4 riders breaking away from the rest and switching positions every lap. Anthony fought hard until the end and crossed the line in 3rd place.
Overall Result: 4 – 3 = 4th overall

MX2
Heat 1, resulted in a tough start for Anthony had him challenging from the back of the field and fighting through the entire race. Anthony caught back to 3rd place from being in 10th on lap 1. Good fight!

Heat 2, Anthony started the race in 4th place after the first lap. It was a hard fought race for the full moto between the top 4. While trying to make a move on the 2nd place rider, Anthony slid out on a wet, slippery corner which saw him get up in 4th place and have to race hard to catch up again. Anthony finished the race in 3rd place.
Overall Result: 3 – 3 = 3rd overall

Thank you so much to all the sponsors for all the support in the 2017 SA season!
Round 2 will take place in Cape Town on the 8 April.

2016 SA Motocross National Round 6 – Harrismith

img_0685-copya
Round 6 of the 2016 SA National Motocross Championship took place in Harrismith on Saturday, 17 September. Freezing temperatures, heavy wind and tight racing was the call of the day.

MX1
Heat 1, Anthony rocketed off the start line to grab the holeshot and lead the strong field around the track on lap 1. Anthony put his head down and put in fast, consistent lap times to win the first heat by 15 seconds.
Heat 2, another smooth fast start saw Anthony grab 2nd place in the start corner and settle in a comfortable spot. Unfortunately on lap 3, the unthinkable happened… Anthony was coming through a fast section of the track and his bike bounced skew causing to go have a hard crash. Anthony got up right a way but he remounted in 5th place and with his bike being bent and broken he had to settle in that position. With the bad second heat, the first heat helped to score a good overall for the day.
FINAL RESULT MX1: 1-5 = 2nd overall
img_7190-copya
MX2
Both MX2 heat races were really good for Anthony, however the results didn’t show for the quality of his riding on the day. Anthony set the fastest lap times in both races by over 1 second , but bad starts made life difficult for Anthony on the tight and twisty Harrismith circuit.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 4-4 = 3rd overall

Anthony is in 2nd place in the MX1 and MX2 SA National Championships. Going into the final round in 2 weeks, Anthony is putting in everything he can to fight for the top spots in both classes.

Upcoming Races:
* 24 September – Zone 7 MX Track Regional Race (Cape Town)
* 1 October – North vs South Invitational Race (Bloemfontein)
* 8 October – Terra Topia MX Track Round 7 SA National Championship  (Johannesburg)

2016 SA Motocross National Round 5 – Thunder Valley, Durban

KZN Zygie Brodalka
Round 5 of the 2016 SA National Motocross Championship took place at Thunder Valley in Kwazulu-Natal on Saturday, 6 August. The weekend got off to a good start with sun shine and humid Durban conditions. Although being warm temperatures the track was well watered and rather muddy for the start of practice on Saturday morning.

MX1
Heat 1, Anthony got off the line and into the first turn in 5th place. He managed to make quick progress to get into 3rd place and battle for the podium. With the track being tight, it was difficult to make ground on the riders in front. Anthony settled in 3rd for the first heat.
With gate selection and good starts being crucial Anthony tried a different gate for heat 2. Unfortunately, it didn’t go in his favour and resulted in Anthony being way back in the field after the first lap. He charged hard and gained good ground and made passes every lap to find himself in 4th after 15 minutes of racing. Without being told, the event organisers cut the race at 17 minutes due to the event running late which left Anthony in 4th place and no time to keep fighting for a podium.
FINAL RESULT MX1: 3-4 = 4th overall
KZN 1 Zygie Brodalka
MX2
The start in heat 1 made life difficult for Anthony. He got far too much wheel spin off the line causing him to be mid-pack in the field. He fought hard all race to work his way into 3rd and then the unthinkable happened twice. His bike stalled twice in two corners which allowed 2 riders past him. He had to ride hard to pass into 4th again before the race ended.
Heat 2 saw Anthony off to a much better start and challenging for a podium spot all race. Anthony tried hard by pushing over the limit into turns and pushing the boundaries. However, it was so difficult to close the gap between the top 3. Anthony finished right behind the 2nd place rider.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 4-3 = 3rd overall

With the SA National Championships being extremely close in the MX1 and MX2 championship for Anthony, the last 2 national rounds is going to be intense racing.

Upcoming Races:
17 September – Holeshot Harry’s Track Round 6 SA National Championship (Harrismith)
8 October – Terra Topia MX Track Round 7 SA National Championship (Johannesburg)

2016 SA Motocross National Round 4 – Syringa, Johannesburg

Syringa - Eric Palmer

Round 4 of the 2016 SA National Motocross Championship took place at Syringa Park in Muldersdrift, Gauteng on Saturday, 2 July. We were welcomed with freezing temperatures, hard-pack terrain and extremely tight track resulting in close racing throughout the day.

MX1
Heat 1, after practice/qualifying Anthony wasn’t feeling comfortable on his 450 bike. Struggling with bike suspension and setup made it a difficult two races. Anthony’s starts were good as always but he felt unsettled and on the edge throughout the 20 minute heat race. Anthony slowed down and kept it on two wheels for 5th place.
Heat 2, Anthony decided to race his 250 bike in the second heat due to not being settled on the bigger bike. It was a tough one because the bigger machines were out the gates first and Anthony had to play catch up from way down in the field to 6th place right behind the 4th place battle.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 5-6 = 5th overall

Syringa 1 - Eric Palmer

MX2
Heat 1, Anthony flew out the gates to grab the hole shot and lead the field around the track. Unfortunately the track was muddy and Anthony ran wide in one of the turns allowing 2 riders through. Anthony fought hard for the full duration of the race and brought it home in 3rd place.
Heat 2, once again Anthony rocketed off the start gates to claim the hole shot and laid down his mark by gaining a 6 second lead after the first 2 laps. Anthony led the race until the last 3 laps where the back markers made the racing a bit difficult due to the track being very narrow and only had one or two lines in corners. Anthony caught the back markers at wrong times which resulted in the 2nd place rider to close on to Anthony and find a way past while working through the back markers. Anthony fought hard until the checkered flag and crossed the line 0.2 seconds behind the leader.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 3-2 = 3rd overall

Anthony still leads the championship in the MX2 championship and is now 2nd in the MX1 championship. Only 4 points separates Anthony from the lead with 3 National Rounds still to go.

Upcoming Races:
6 August – Thunder Valley MX Track Round 5 SA National Championship (Pietermaritzburg, KZN)
13 August – Zone 7 MX Track Regional (Cape Town)

2016 SA Motocross National Round 3 – BORC, Bloemfontein

_K2I1900 copyr

A muddy and loamy BORC Tempe MX Circuit welcomed Round 3 of the SA National Motocross Championship over the weekend, 28 May. An exciting and well-maintained track made for great racing throughout the day.

MX1
Heat 1, Anthony got around the first corner in 3rd place and charged hard to try get around the 2nd place rider but the track was still very muddy causing the circuit to only have one main race line. Anthony had to settle for 3rd place and not risk losing points by crashing.
Heat 2 resulted in Anthony having a similar situation as heat 1. Anthony fought for the lead down the start line but ran a bit wide in the first corner dropping him into 3rd. The MX1 class top 3 riders set a high pace and were in a league of there own. Unfortunately with a one lined track Anthony tried but couldn’t successfully challenge for the win.
FINAL RESULT MX1: 3-3 = 3rd overall

_K2I2832 copy 3r

MX2
Heat 1, Anthony jumped into 3rd position from the start and fought his way into 2nd early in the race. He then set his target for the 1st place spot and closed down the gap to 1 second. Unfortunately, at that point the lapped riders were being passed and a few of them blocked Anthony from getting through which opened the gap to 4 seconds and only one lap left of the race. Anthony settled for a comfortable 2nd place.
Heat 2, Anthony started the race in 2nd place from the start. After two laps Anthony passed for the lead but it was a hot contested heat with a 3 way race and switching places. Running out of laps caused Anthony to finish in 3rd with 1.5 seconds between the top 3 places. Extremely close racing.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 2-3 = 3rd overall

Anthony now takes over the championship points lead in both the MX1 and MX2 SA MX National Championships. A massive achievement and proud moment for Anthony and his team.

Upcoming Races:
11 June – Killarney Race Track Regional (Cape Town)
2 July – Syringa MX Track Round 4 SA National Championship (Johannesburg)

2016 WOMZA Motocross National – BORC, Bloemfontein

Womza Bloem 1 May 2016

It was a last minute decision to head up to Bloemfontein for Round 2 of the WOMZA National Series. The decision was made because we have Round 3 of the MSA Nationals coming up at the same track in Bloemfontein. Therefore, this event was good for me to learn the track and get a good bike set up. WOMZA events have an Open Premier class which is MX1 and MX2 class combined and there is 3 races for that class on the day. I have always loved the Bloemfontein circuit and I was looking forward to a great day of racing.

The first two heats were perfect as I lead from the start without any mistakes and brought it home in 1st place. Unfortunately in heat 3, my seat fell off on lap 2 causing me to have to stand up for the rest of the 20 minute heat. This is difficult on the Bloemfontein circuit as you have to be seated on most of the tight corners. I pushed my hardest every lap and brought the bike home in 3rd place. Overall it was a good weekend and looking forward to the MSA National at the end of the month.

FINAL RESULT MX1: 1-1-3 = 1st overall

2016 SA Motocross National Round 2 – Zone 7, Cape Town

_DSC6820

Overcast and rainy conditions were on the cards for Round 2 of the SA National Motocross Championship at Zone 7 in Cape Town on 2 April 2016. The weather provided the perfect race conditions and a massive Cape Town crowd were ready for action.

MX1
Qualifying, Anthony was 3rd fastest and felt confident leading into Heat 1.
Heat 1, Anthony didn’t get the start that he expected and found himself in 8th place on lap 1. With smart passing moves and extremely fast, consistent lap times Anthony fought his way into 3rd position by the last lap of the race. He ran out of time to catch the leader, but finished 0.5 seconds behind 2nd place rider.
Heat 2, Anthony got the holeshot and lead the strong field of 30 riders from start to finish to claim the 1st place position and leave his mark on home soil.
FINAL RESULT MX1: 3-1 = 2nd overall

_DSC7065

MX2
Qualifying, Anthony set the fastest lap time out of 40 riders to earn himself pole position for the day.
Heat 1, Anthony was first into the start corner clicking the holeshot for the first race of the day. Lap after lap Anthony turned in consistent times and rode a smooth race for his first win of the day.
Heat 2, Anthony launched out the gates for another holeshot and once again charged hard to make a gap between the other riders. The Cape Town crowd loved seeing Anthony put all his hard training into action and put on a master class performance. Another victory in heat 2 saw Anthony earn top honours for the day in the MX2 category.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 1-1 = 1st overall

2016 SA Motocross National Round 1 – Rover MX, Port Elizabeth

PE (eric palmer)
A dry and warm day welcomed Round 1 of the SA National Motocross Championship at Rover MX in Port Elizabeth on the 27 February 2016. I was looking forward to a great day of racing on the rough and physically demanding track.

MX1
The MX1 class is stacked with top names in 2016 providing strong competition and great racing.
Heat 1, I got bunched up in the start corner which put me out of the top 10 in the first lap. I worked hard all race to get through the field resulting in me ending the heat in 2nd.
Heat 2, a better start saw me in 2nd for the first few laps until I passed for the lead. With 5 minutes remaining, I made a small mistake costing me the lead of the race. I managed to settle and bring it home in 2nd.
FINAL RESULT MX1: 2-2 = 2nd

PE Nationals - Roger Lagesse
MX2
In practice and qualifying I set the fastest lap time which gifted me first gate pick for the races to come.
Heat 1, I was first into the start corner grabbing the hole shot. I lead the race for 15 mins until a lapped rider got in my way causing me to shift down to 2nd and finish the heat in that position.
Heat 2, I flew out the gates for another hole shot and managed to open up a 10 second lead in the first three laps of the race. I rode smooth and calm to lead the race from start to finish with a solid gap.
FINAL RESULT MX2: 2-1 = 1st overall

WOMZA National Round 4 – East London

Day 1 of Racing:

Track was really muddy and gnarly all day. Practice and qualifying went really well with me ending in 1st place in both.

First race I got a good start and was in 2nd place when they red flagged the race due to start gates malfunction. After the restart I didn’t get as good of a start but managed to settle in 3rd after the first turn battles. Pushed hard to fight for the win, but the track being very one lined made it difficult to make a pass. So a 3rd for me in heat 1.

Round up of day 2 WOMZA East London Nationals:

The track was ripped and watered heavily for the second day of racing and with the MX2 heat being the first race of the day it was going to be challenging. I got a fairly good start which put me in 2nd place around the first lap. With the track being muddy and very sloshy I made a move for the lead diving up the inside of a tight corner which unfortunately was extremely wet and caused my front wheel to dig in and me going down. I remounted way down the pack and managed to fight back to 8th in the heat.

The final heat of the day, we had different conditions with the track drying up a bit and having one dry line. I got another top 3 start and had a fun race battling within the top 4 and making good passes. With time running out, I finished in 4th place.

4th overall for the weekend with my 3-8-4 heat results. Thank you very much to all my incredible sponsors, friends and family for the continuous support!! I really appreciate it so much!! My team, thank you for the awesome trip and all the help & support over the weekend! Onwards and upwards to the final round of the WOMZA nationals in JHB, 6 – 7 September! #AR23

WOMZA National Round 3 – Richard’s Bay, Durban

Day 1 results:

Productive days racing. Set fastest time in practice and 4th fastest in qualifying. 1st moto I snatched the hole shot & charged until I got caught up and moved to 3rd. Tried a different line in a sand section and dropped the bike, resulting in me bringing it home in 4th place. Learnt a lot today & thankful for all the support I have from everyone! Tomorrow is the second and third heats. Definitely going to be good racing! Taking the positives into tomorrow and looking forward to a top days racing. Well done to all the riders.

Day 2 results:

And that’s a wrap of 2014 Teza National in Richards Bay. We had two moto’s today. Track was super gnarly and temperatures were high but a good day of racing. Heat 2: It was a tough race for me finishing in 4th place. Heat 3: After another good start I just got squeezed out for the holeshot. The race was long and hard amongst the top 3 resulting in me finishing in 3rd. With my 4-4-3 results, I finished 4th overall and still holding onto the red plate leading into the next WOMZA national. Time to regroup and push forward. Big thanks to all my sponsors for their amazing support! Roger Bergstrom, Fcr Suspension, thank you for all the help over this weekend and the last week! And a HUGE thank you to my dad for spending Fathers Day with me at my national. Can’t thank you enough for everything you do for me! Happy Father’s Day Dad!
